LYRICS, THE STORY IN THE MUSIC

Song Lyrics by: Michael Sean Perry

{c: Verse}

My name’s Jacob Phillip Meyers and I come from Arkansas

Saving Souls is my trade

In the summer of 1863 I joined with the 2nd Infantry

I fought for my life in them rolling hills

The war between the states for me it weren’t about slavery

But money changing hands on both sides of the flag

The Meyers Clan we worked our own land

That’s the way it’s been since I don’t know when

God willing that’s the way it will always be

{c: Chorus}

This old broke down preacher is a survivor you see

I’ve got many a murdered man waiting in the afterlife for me

{c: Verse}

Got a dead aim shot in my right eye

I filled up Aunt Minnie’s stews and pies

With every little critter unlucky enough to cross my path

It was this alacrity that attracted the sergeant’s attention to me

And Damned my soul for the deeds I have done

What some folks call murder you see

Just became shooting uniforms to me

Stack those boys as high as I’m tall

Fighting in the mud and the blood and the guts

marching in the cold and the wind and the rain

Sleeping on the ground and eating what ain’t even food

{c: Bridge}

Some call me a traitor others say I’m a hero

Got a medal they pinned on my chest but I deserve the gallows pole

So I’ll wander this wide open land

Bible and a pistol in my hands

{c: Verse}

There ain’t nothing good that war taught me

Killing men that’s on their knees then

Burning everything they had to the ground

Living life for Jesus Christ

Is the best that I can do

And pray that of the time I have left

The worst of it is through

{c: Chorus}

This old broke down preacher is a survivor you see

I’ve got many a murdered man waiting in the afterlife for me
